My name is Mieke Stones, I am a 31-year old female, living in South East London. I work in marketing for sports and am fortunate enough to love what I do. Earlier this year, I got married and celebrated with an incredible honeymoon and am now saving to buy.
Even though I am now in my thirties and ‘settling down’ so-to-speak, I yearn for an adventure. Something challenging, difficult and rewarding.
I’m one of the ‘lucky’ ones who loved being active from a young age. I played Netball, ran for an Athletics club and just loved any sports. I then got into marathons and more recently triathlons. I love a physical challenge, mostly endurance but I think it’s the mental challenge these competitions give me that I love the most.
So, why exactly am I doing this?
A whole year of travelling by only bike, or using my own two feet, walking or running – everywhere I go? Well, mainly, I want a new challenge and something, just a bit different. I’ve always thought about doing bigger and longer runs, like consecutive marathons or something. And there are plenty of routes, like Lands’ End to John O’Groats, for a longer bike distance. But, I want something that fits into my life, doesn’t cost me a fortune, but still gives me that personal physical and mental adventure.
I’ve been cycling for over 4 years’ now in London. I’m pretty confident and cycle in all-weather. I’m fortunate enough to live close to where I work, so I can run, walk or bike to and from work every day. Most days I do, but there are always days where I just can’t be bothered, or it’s just chucking it down with rain. I also do lots of stuff in the evenings and weekends like any other person. Go to the cinema, see friends, maybe a marketing seminar. Every so often I cycle to and from these places, but a lot of the time I either get the tube, bus and sometimes we drive places too.
Also, before we know it, it’s Christmas again and then it’s New Years and resolutions. I never stick to my resolutions – they are always a bit crap (like drink less coffee) and I don’t feel like I get much out of them. So, I thought, why not find a physical challenge that takes new year’s resolution to the max, fits into my current routine, saves me money and helps the environment too?
That’s how and why Powered by Me was born
A whole year travelling anywhere I need to go just using myself (and my bike when it’s that little bit too far). As well as the personal challenge, I want to track as much as I can (because data is fun), learn more about bikes (because I’ll have to) and raise money for a different charity each month.
There are other things I want to get out of this adventure too – like trying out new pieces of tech, equipment and hopefully bike, run and walk with other people along the way who I very much look forward to meeting with this experience.
So, if you’re interested in this blog post and my aspiration, please share, comment and follow this adventure with me. I’ll begin on 1 January 2017, but during December this year, will begin posting more and getting prepared, so watch this space as more is coming soon.
